My 5 Principles of Cinematography

  1. The Director’s Vision Comes First
    The DP’s role is to serve the director’s vision—while bringing their own perspective and soul to it. It’s like playing jazz: bring ideas, improvise, but always in harmony, never just to solo.

  2. Images in Service of Story
    A “beautiful” image isn’t always the right one. The look should be rooted in the story’s language, not imposed on it. Each project demands its own visual truth.

  3. The Camera as Instrument
    The camera isn’t a window—it’s a paintbrush, a violin. It’s more expressive than we often allow, capable of translating emotion, psychology, and atmosphere rather than just recording events.

  4. Know the Rules, Then Break Them
    Master the conventions so you can bend or break them with purpose, not by accident.

  5. Meaning Through Intent
    Cinematography is more than light, color, and composition—it’s the philosophy behind every choice. Why this angle? Why this lens? Why this move? Intent turns aesthetics into meaning and gives images the power to resonate beyond beauty.
