Director's Statement
“Making DONOMA was a very personal endeavor for me. My grandparents come from a long line of Choctaw ancestry, that walked the sorrowful Trail of Tears as they relocated to Oklahoma. The film was inspired by a story my grandmother used to tell me growing up. I wanted to share this story about my ancestors that gave them the beauty and mystery that I love to find in cinema.
The film explores a realm where mysticism, faith, and nature converge with the cosmos. Through a distinct and immersive perspective, it transforms the ordinary into the transcendent. Rooted in Native American wisdom, the story carries both optimism and mystery—honoring tradition while revealing a side of American Indian life seldom portrayed: one of strength, wonder, and spiritual awakening rather than pain or tragedy. It is a story about courage over fear, about stepping out of youth and into the Divine power that shapes one’s path forward. A boy’s first prayer. A boy’s first act of faith in his father.”
